Volleyball team heads into WIAC tournament at Eau Claire Tuesday

MENOMONIE (October 29, 2012) - The UW-Stout volleyball team (15-13, 3-5 WIAC) will make their first appearance in the WIAC Tournament since the 2008 season when they travel to UW-Eau Claire (22-11, 6-2 WIAC), Tuesday, Oct. 30, for a WIAC Quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the WIAC semifinals, Friday, Nov. 2 at UW-Stevens Point. Stout lost their last two WIAC contests, falling at UW-Oshkosh, Oct. 26, and at UW-Whitewater, Oct. 27. Stout is the sixth seed in the tournament, while Eau Claire is the third seed. The last time Stout made the WIAC tournament, they also traveled to UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals match.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stout played a close match with UW-Whitewater, but the scales did not tip the Blue Devils' way and the Warhawks handed Stout a 3-0 loss Saturday. The Warhawks took the first set 25-18, but Stout tightened the scores in the second and third sets, losing both sets by identical 25-23 decisions. Leanna Lillge and Caroline Langer combined for 32 kills for the Warhawks, with Lillge getting 15 and Langer 17. Stout got nine kills from Kate Mikutowski and eight from Morgan Denny. A LOOK AT STOUT: Kate Mikutowski leads the Blue Devils in kills by averaging 3.20 kills per set, ranking her sixth. Mikutowski is 12th in the league in digs (3.14) and 16th in service aces (0.26). For her career, Mikutowski has surpassed 1000 kills (1034) and digs (1009). Morgan Denny is fourth in the WIAC in blocks (37 solo/61 assisted/98 total/0.98 per set). She is the Blue Devils' second leading hitter (2.57 kills/set) and leads the team in service aces (0.28), ranking 12th in the league. Denny is hitting at a .265 clip, ranking 11th in the WIAC. Karley Wiensch is averaging 9.47 assists per set. Megan Shanahn is averaging a team-best 3.76 digs per set, ranking ninth in the league. She currently has 989 career digs. Stout earned the sixth seed in the WIAC Tournament with their best finish since the 2006 season (15-14) and their best conference finish since the 2005 season (3-5)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Morgan Denny, So, Luck, Wis.

THE BLUGOLDS' LAST TIME OUT:  The Blugolds defeated Platteville 3-2, Oct. 27. Eau Claire took an early lead by winning the first set 25-15 before dropping two close sets 25-22 and 26-24. But the Blugolds weren't finished yet and won the final two sets 25-23 and 15-12 to win the match. Amy Bomgren and Anne Satterlee contributed 20 and 15 of the team's 67 kills, respectively. Two other Blugolds also reached double figures in kills. Lauren Sutherland recorded 19 digs to lead Eau Claire, while teammate Kelly Schuh tacked on 15 more. A LOOK AT UW-EAU CLAIRE: The Blugolds finished second in the WIAC, tied with UW-Whitewater, but the Warhawks held the tie-breaker with Eau Claire, dropping the Blugolds to the third seed. As a team, Eau Claire leads the league in service aces, averaging 1.94 per set. Amy Bomgren leads the Blugolds in kills, averaging 3.48 per set. Anne Satterlee is right behind at 3.44. Alexis Wong is second in the WIAC in service aces (0.44). The Blugolds average 13.02 kills per set. | Stats

LAST TIME THEY MET: Morgan Denny  hit at a .417 clip with 10 kills, but it wouldn't be enough as UW-Stout lost their conference opener, 3-0, at UW-Eau Claire Sept. 19. Denny committed only two errors in 17 attacks and one block assist as Stout took a 25-16, 25-21, 25-17 loss. The Blugolds' Anne Satterlee led all players with 13 kills and Amy Bomgren had 11. The Blugolds have a 16 match winning streak over the Blue Devils. Stout's last win over Eau Claire came on Sept. 14, 2005, a Stout 3-0 win.  |  Complete Story

UW-STOUT COACH JILL JOLLIFF: Coach Jill Jolliff (348-303) is in her 20th season with the Blue Devils and has the most wins of any UW-Stout volleyball coach.

QUICK HITS: Stout more than doubled their wins total from last year about halfway through the season...Mikutowski collected a career-best 25 kills against St. Mary's, then recorded 24 the next time out against UW-Superior...Mikutowski is currently ninth on the UW-Stout all-time kills list...Freshman Molly Brion was selected as the WIAC Athlete of the Week after averaging nearly four kills per set in three matches in mid-September...The last time Stout defeated Eau Claire, the NCAA was playing up to 30 points in a set....Morgan Denny's hitting percentage of .265 is the best by a Blue Devil since Maggie Meixl finished at .280 in 2008...Twice this season Stout put together four match winning streaks, and went 9-5 over their last 14 matches....Stout started the season dropping their first four matches, but never lost more than two consecutive matches since.

WORKING OVERTIME: When UW-Stout and St. Catherine played to a 36-34 Stout third set win, Oct. 13, it was the longest set in the Stout program the 25-point era. During the 30-point era, a seven season stretch throughout much of the last decade, several sets went to 34 points or more.
