Stout volleyball comeback comes up points short to Falcons

MENOMONIE (October 10, 2012) - Seemingly left for dead, UW-Stout rose from sure defeat and came back to tie the match with UW-River Falls, only to see their come back fall just points short Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

After a giving up a late lead in set one to fall 26-24, River Falls handed Stout a 25-19 second set loss before the Blue Devils came to life. Stout (10-10, 2-3 WIAC) shut down the Falcons (17-6, 4-1 WIAC) in sets 3 and 4, 25-14 and 25-15, setting up the fifth set that River Falls captured, 15-13.

The Blue Devils were led by freshman Molly Brion (Cameron) with 19 kills. Kate Mikutowski (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) added 10 kills. Karley Wiensch (So, Chippewa Falls) had 32 assists and Megan Shanahan (Sr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) had 26 kills. Morgan Denny (So, Luck) had three solo blocks and two block assists. Mikutowski had two solo blocks and two block assists.

The Falcons' Erin Green, the conference kills leader, put down 22 kills, while Brianna Muetzel pitched in 17. Green had three block assists.

Stout will host the seven-team UW-Stout Tournament, Oct. 12-13, then close the home portion of their schedule when they UW-Superior, Wednesday, Oct. 17.
