Blue Devils downed in five by Eagles

UW-La Crosse 3, UW-Stout 2

LA CROSSE (September 24, 2011) - It's almost becoming a habit between UW-Stout and UW-La Crosse. For the third straight meeting, the two teams have gone to five sets. But unfortunately for the Blue Devils, for the third straight time they have come out on the short end of the 3-2 decision to the Eagles, this time Saturday at Mitchell Hall.

The teams traded wins, with the Eagles winning all of the odd sets, while the Blue Devils won the even sets. La Crosse took the match, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Eagles (4-7, 1-1 WIAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead, then kept Stout (3-11, 0-3) at bay at 10-6 when the Blue Devils rolled off three points to pull to within 10-9. Following a timeout, the Eagles picked up the first point and pecked their way to the win.

The Eagles' Kayla Ashland led all scorers with 18 kills. Katie Gunderson added 16, Lauren Probst 13 and Erin Stalker 11.

For Stout, Kate Mikutowski (Jr, Stillwater, Minn) led the way with 14 and Tori Sandstrom (Jr, Cary, Ill) put down 10.  Megan Shanahan (Jr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) tallied 23 digs. The five-set match was the first of the season for Stout.

Stout will host Augsburg College, Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m., then will travel to Carleton College where they will play the host Carleton and Buena Vista, Saturday, Oct. 1.
