MENOMONIE (September 24, 2011)
- UW-Stout put two goals on the board in the first half, and then the defense did the rest in the second half as the Blue Devils defeated UW-Whitewater, 2-1, Saturday at Nelson Field.

The win was the first for the Blue Devils (5-1-0, 2-1-0 WIAC) over the Warhawks (4-4-1, 1-1-1) since a 3-0 win on Sept. 16, 2005 at Nelson Field.

The Blue Devils got an early goal when Courtney Tideman (Sr, Sartell, Minn) hit Emily Stanke (Jr, Elk Grove Village, Ill) who passed the ball to Jesse Lankford (So, Cedar Falls, Iowa) who put the ball home for her third goal of the season.

The Blue Devils kept the pressure on the Whitewater defense throughout the first half, putting a total of five shots on net, while the defense limited the Warhawks to one.

With about a minute left in the first half, Stout sent a flurry at the Warhawk goal, but hit the cross bar and were blocked by a defender. But only seconds later, Lankford found Stanke on the right side of the box and Stanke hammered home what eventually would become the game winner.

The tables turned in the second half, as the Warhawks became the aggressor, ripping off nine total shots and six on frame. The lone shot that got past Stout goalkeeper Robbie Shelby (Fr, La Crosse) came in the 68th minute when Kaitlyn Fritsch played a corner kick from Emily Gerber into the net.

The Warhawks continued to push the ball forward, clanking one shot off the cross bar late in the game and pressing Stout with five corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of play. Stout's defenders consistently cleared the ball or Shelby would leap for the corner kicks to stop the attempt.

Shelby finished the afternoon with six saves, five in the second half, while the Warhawks' Jordan Myers had four saves.

Stout will host St. Norbert College in a non-conference contest, Sunday, Sept. 25 at Nelson Field.
