Soccer team wins season opener

Coach Raufus, goalie Shelby get first collegiate wins

UW-Stout 2, Gustavus Adolphus 0

ST. PETER, Minn (September 2, 2011) - Two second half goals and a solid defensive effort made winners out of UW-Stout first year coach Ryan Raufus and first year goalie Robbie Shelby (Fr, La Crosse) as the Blue Devils blanked Gustavus Adolphus College, 2-0, in the season opener for both teams Friday.

After a scoreless first half, Jesse Lankford (So, Cedar Falls, Iowa) took a pass from Kayla Seivert (So, Farmington, Minn) and scored from the left side in the 50th minute.

Fifteen minutes later, senior Courtney Tideman (Sartell, Minn) scored from the same side when she headed in a pass from freshman Taylor Kizlik (Hammond) in the 65th minute for a 2-0 score.

Meanwhile, the Stout defense allowed only six shots throughout the afternoon and only four on frame, as Shelby posted the shutout by stopping all shots.

The Blue Devil offense punched the ball at Gusties' goalie Jessica Richart, getting off 14 shots, seven of them on goal and made two count on the scoreboard.

Stout returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they open at home by facing Viterbo University at 7 p.m.
