Blue Devils capitalize on Jimmie mistakes for win

Linebacker Ryan Pearcy records 20 tackles, interception, forced fumble

UW-Stout 20, Jamestown College 17

JAMESTOWN, ND (September 10, 2011) - UW-Stout took advantage of several Jamestown College mistakes, but, after allowing a couple of big plays by Jamestown, had to hang on at the end of the game to take a 20-17 win over the Jimmies at Rollie Greeno Field Saturday.

The Blue Devils (2-0) held a 14-3 halftime lead after fullback #David Goebel# (So, Minnetonka, Minn) scored his first two collegiate touchdowns.

Stout linebacker #Ryan Pearcy# (Sr, Plover), who finished the game with 20 tackles, set up Stout's first score with an interception on Jamestown 30 yard line and returned the ball to the 20 yard line. Five plays later, Stout scored when quarterback #Ross Carey# (Sr, Little Suamico) completed a fourth and goal pass to Goebel for a one-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter.

The Blue Devil defense dodged several bullets in the first quarter, aiding a Jimmies (1-1) drive with a personal foul, then stopping the Jimmies on downs. On the ensuing drive, Stout was stopped and the punt was returned deep. But a block in the back on the Jimmies sent the ball back to the opposite of the field.

Stout doubled the score with eight minutes left in the second quarter when Goebel rambled for his second score of the game, going up the middle for a 24-yard score on third and one.

The Jimmies added a 21 yard field goal with two minutes and Stout took a 14-3 lead into halftime.

#Trevor Fiege# (Sr, Menomonie) set up Stout's first score in the second half when he blocked a punt and recovered the ball on the Jamestown 14. #Ricky Marteney# (So, Greenfield) chipped in a 24-yard field goal to give Stout a 17-3 lead.

The Jimmies were opportunistic on defense, forcing Carey into a pair of interceptions on back-to-back series. Jamestown used a quick strike to tighten the score when Lance Johanson ran 77 yards for a score to pull to within 17-10.

Fiege gave Stout the ball back to what would prove to be the game-winning points when he interecepted the ball at the Stout 30 and Stout drove for a 33-yard Marteney field goal.

But Jamestown scorched Stout on the first play after the ensuing kickoff. Quarterback Matt Lint connected with Matt Wilson for a 69-yard touchdown reception down the middle of the field with about four minutes left.

The Jimmies stopped the Blue Devils and Stout punted the ball back to the Jamestown 15 and the Jimmies moved the ball to the Stout 20 yard line.  On fourth down, Jamestown elected to go for the win and #Damian Guggenbuehl# (So, La Crosse) picked off the pass in the end zone as the clock ticked down.

Stout's starting linebackers had outstanding days.  In addition to the 20 tackles, Pearcy finished with an interception and a fumble forced. Fiege also had an interception, a blocked punt and recovered the punt.
