Hopper nearly flawless, Gay gets hat trick in win

MENOMONIE (February 12, 2011)
- Nick Hopper (So, Culver City, Calif) made 44 saves and Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) scored a hat trick as UW-Stout downed second ranked St. Norbert College, 5-1, Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The only goal Hopper allowed was off a penalty shot early in the third period when Stout had built a 3-0 lead.

Gay scored a goal in each period to record Stout's first hat trick of the season. Sam Carr (So, Roseau, Minn) had four assists.

Stout (15-10-0, 10-8-0 NCHA) jumped all over the Green Knights (20-4-1, 14-3-1 NCHA) early, when Robert Carr (Sr, Roseau, Minn) scored six minutes into the game. Less than two minutes later, Gay scored his first goal of the night. Gay added to the lead four minutes into the second period.

St. Norbert got their only goal when Kyle Stroh took the penalty shot, punching the shot into the goal off Hopper's left side at 3:32 of the third period.

Gay took the sting out of the penalty shot at the 11 minutes mark to notch the hat trick. Logan Maly got the empty net goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game.

St. Norbert pulled their goalie with more than four minutes left on the clock, and the net stood empty for almost three minutes. St. Norbert goalie Mike Martin recorded 28 saves,

The win was Stout's first win over St. Norbert since Jan. 27, 2007, when the Blue Devils took a 2-1 win in Green Bay. The win was Stout's fifth win over the St. Norbert program.

Stout will host a first round NCHA playoff series, Feb. 18-19.
