MENOMONIE (December 9, 2011) - UW-Stevens Point came out firing and never let up as they defeated UW-Stout 4-1 Friday in an NCHA/WIAC contest at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Pointers put 47 shots on net for game, 19 in the first period alone, and took a 1-0 lead with a man in the penalty box for a shorthanded goal at 12:58 of the first period. Chad Boeckman scored unassisted to open the scoring.

Penalties would be a key story in the game. The two teams combined for 21 total penalties, including three 10 minute penalties and a game disqualification.

But the Pointers (4-6-2, 3-4-2 NCHA) did not take advantage of five power play opportunities, preferring to score their next three goals at even strength.

Luke Nesper, with assists by Will Aide and Kyle Heck, scored at 2:34 in the second period. Dylan Wizner, with an assist by Harrison Niemann, scored at 14:10 in the second and Scott Heneger, with assists by Nesper and Jon Bockman, scored moments later to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead.

Following a long delay to sort out several penalties with about five minutes remaining in the second period, Stout (5-6-1, 2-4-1 NCHA) took advantage of a power play opportunity to score their only goal of the game, a marker by Mike Hartviksen (So, Thunder Bay, Ont), with assists by Branden Gay (Sr, Calgary, Alberta) and Micky Knox (Warroad, Minn).

The Pointers did not sit on their lead, but continued to pound Stout goalie Nick Hopper (Jr, Culver City, Calif) with 15 shots on frame in the final stanza. Hopper turned all of the shots aside. Hopper finished the night with 43 saves, while the Pointers' Nick Graves had 32 saves.

The two teams will meet again Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
