UW-Oshkosh 35, UW-Stout 3
OSHKOSH (November 12, 2011) - UW-Stout's #
Eric Brown# (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) had a career day, but that didn't stop UW-Oshkosh from running off 35 unanswered points as the Titans rolled over UW-Stout, 35-3, for the second time this season.
The first quarter was an up-and-down affair for the Blue Devils (5-5, 3-4 WIAC). Stout recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, then drove to the Oshkosh 11, only to see a #
Ricky Marteney# (So, Greenfield) field goal blocked.
The Titans did little with the ball and punted back to Stout on their own 43. Stout drove 51 yards on 11 plays and #
Ryan Howg# (Jr, Otsego, Minn) connected on a 22-yard field goal with five minutes left in the first period to give Stout a 3-0 lead.
The Titans (7-3, 5-2) converted the kickoff into their first touchdown of the afternoon, going 90 yards in six plays, on the strength of back-to-back receptions of 42- and 22-yards to Caleb Voss. Nick Wara capped off the drive with a 15 yard scoring reception to Garrie Fox.
Brown would begin to pick up yardage for Stout throughout the second quarter, but twice the Blue Devils were turned back by interceptions. And the Titans converted both interceptions into points and added another score just before halftime to take a 28-3 lead.
Oshkosh scored on a 30-yard reception from Wara to Cory Wipperfurth at 13:42 of the second. Fox scored his second of three touchdowns on the day at 7:43 on a four-yard play and Charlie Weissman turned in a 29-yard scoring pass just before halftime.
Fox added an 18-yard score in the third quarter to finish the trifecta and give Oshkosh the final score.
Brown carried the ball 29 times for 169 yards, both Stout bests for the junior. The 29 carries was the most for a Stout running back since
Craig Warminski carried the ball 32 times against. UW-La Crosse in 2008.
Quarterback #
Ross Carey# (Sr, Little Suamico) had an unauspicious close to his career. The senior was intercepted three times and sacked six times. Carey completed 14 of 33 passes for 149 yards. #
Jordan Peterson# (Sr, Cedar Grove) was by far Carey's favorite target in both players' final collegiate games. Peterson hauled in eight passes for 85 yards, including a 35 yard reception, all career-bests. #
Ryan Ericksen# (Jr, Stanley) added to his team-leading sack numbers, recording Stout's only sack of the day, to finish at 5.5 sacks.
But it would the Titans' day. Wara completed 19-of-29 passes for 300 yards and five touchdowns. Fox had seven receptions for 93 yards and three scores, while Voss had three receptions for 76 yards. Oshkosh finished with 427 total yards of offense, 300 in the air, 127 on the ground. Stout tallied 324 yards of offense, 175 on the ground, 149 in the air.
In a non-conference meeting between the two teams in September in Menomonie, the Titans ran all over Stout, 56-10.
