Photo GalleryMENOMONIE (October 6, 2011) - Off to one of the best starts in school history, UW-Stout accomplished something they have only done once in their 17 year history - defeat UW-Stevens Point.
Coming into Thursday's game at Nelson Field, the Pointers held a 16-1 advantage in the series, with Stout's only win coming on Oct. 1, 2004, at Stevens Point.
The Blue Devils (7-1-1, 3-1-0 WIAC) scored twice in the first half, then hunkered down and held the Pointers (7-4-0, 3-2-0) to one second half goal for a 2-1 win.
Jesse Lankford (So, Cedar Falls, Iowa) got things going when she delivered a long ball to
Grace Salwasser (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) who put the ball in the baggie in the 18th minute.
Twenty minutes later,
Alix Hyduke (So, Duluth, Minn) took a pass from
Emily Stanke (Jr, Elk Grove Village, Ill) in a crowd and slipped the ball past Pointer goalkeeper Brittany Marx.
The Pointers came at Stout hard in the second half, getting off five second half shots and found the back of the net in the 60th minute on a Lauryn Semling shot.
Stout held the Pointers to only two shots for the rest of the game, and
Robbie Shelby (Fr, La Crosse) made a save with five minutes left. Shelby finished the game with four saves, while Marx had one save. Stout got off no effective shots in the second half, four in the first half, but three were on net and two were scores.
The seven wins so far this season match the number of wins from last season. Stout is ranked ninth in the North Region and the Pointers are ranked fifth.
The Blue Devils moved into a first place tie with the Pointers in the WIAC. Stout will be idle until they host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
