LA CROSSE (October 29, 2011) - UW-La Crosse crushed UW-Stout's WIAC title chances with a 1-0 win Saturday.
The Eagles (10-5-2, 5-1-2 WIAC) scored the lone goal of the game in the 15th minute when Taylor Baker scored off Courtney Weber's rebounded shot.
Both teams shot well and evenly, with Stout (11-4-1, 5-3-0) outshooting La Crosse, 19-17, but the Eagles put more shots on net, holding a 7-5 edge. Stout's
Robbie Shelby (Fr, La Crosse) recorded six saves, while the Eagles' Sagan Pizzingrilli had five saves.
For the Blue Devils to claim the WIAC crown for the first time, Stout needed to beat the Eagles and UW-Eau Claire needed to either tie or beat UW-Whitewater, the conference leader. The Warhawks took a 2-1 win over the Blugolds.
Stout will head into WIAC tournament play as the third seed and will play either UW-Stevens Point, UW-River Falls or UW-Platteville, Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Menomonie. Platteville was hosting Stevens Point tonight.
