MENOMONIE, Wis. (October 22, 2011) - Nearly half of #Ross Carey#'s passing yards came on one play, but it turned out to be the play of the game as it led Stout to a two-posession lead that sealed the 10-0 victory over UW-La Crosse, Saturday night at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.

On the first play after #Aaron Kobes# (Sr, Two Rivers) picked off La Crosse (2-5, 1-3 WIAC) quarterback Mike Butterfield, Carey (Sr, Little Suamico) hit a streaking #Trevor Morning# (So, Bloomer) for a 47-yard hookup that led to a three yard #Eric Brown# (Jr, St. Paul, Minn.) touchdown run.  The three play, 53-yard drive gave Stout (4-3, 2-2) a 10-0 lead with under six minutes remaining, and the Blue Devils' defense did the rest.

Both offenses were slow to get going in the rare night game at Williams Stadium.  Each punter had nine punts on the night, and they combined to punt 12 times in the first half.  La Crosse's Christian Hallingstad was called on each of his team's first six drives, five of which were three-and-outs for the Eagles offense.

The first half's standout was Stout punter #Mike Scherr# (Fr, Hartford), who pinned La Crosse inside their own 10 yard line four times in the first half.  Scherr also dropped one on the Eagles' four yard line on his last punt of the game.  #Ricky Marteney# (So, Greenfield) put up the only points of the first half, kicking a 32-yard field goal to cap off a six play, 39 yard drive.

On their first drive of the third quarter, Stout looked like their offense was going to get it going.  They called on third string running back #Daniel Vyvyan# to give the sluggish offense a boost.  Vyvyan's first six carries of the drive went for a combined 53 yards, setting up a first and goal from the nine.  However, Vyvyan's seventh carry ended up in the hands of an Eagle defender after a fumble left Stout scoreless in their second red zone appearance.

Stout's defense forced La Crosse to punt each time they got the ball in the third quarter, and Kobes' interception late in the fourth set up the game-winning drive for the Blue Devils.

This was the first shutout of the season for this Blue Devils' defense.  #Ryan Pearcy# (Sr, Plover) led the defensive charge with 17 tackles and one of Stout's six sacks on Butterfield.  Kobes, who finished with 10 tackles, added one solo sack to go along with his game-changing interception.  #Kyle Ahrens# (Fr, Menomonie), playing with a club on his hand, was the only Stout defender to record multiple sacks, as he took down the quarterback twice.

Out of 26 combined drives on the night, 12 of them ended without a first down.  The game's only real offensive standout for either team was La Crosse's Tony Bilderback, who reeled in seven passes for 118 yards, which was 15 yards more than Stout's receivers combined.  Butterfield, who dealt with heavy pressure all night, completed 10 of his 23 attempts for 148 yards.  Carey was 9-for-22 for 103 yards.

While Stout was innefective with the passing game for most of the night, they arguably won the game on the ground, averaging nearly 4.5 yards per carry, while limiting the Eagles to less than 1.8 yards per rush.

Stout will travel to River Falls to take on the Falcons next Saturday, Oct. 29, then return home on Nov. 5 to host Platteville in their final regular season home game.
