MENOMONIE (October 14, 2011) - After taking a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque, UW-Stout took their frustrations out and finished off Macalester College, 3-0, in a 45 minute match in the final game on the first day of the UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils averaged 15 minutes a set in dispatching the Scots, 25-10, 25-14, 25-16, to snap a nine-game losing skid.
Playing without leading scorer
Kate Mikutowski (Jr, Stillwater, Minn), who was injured in the first game, the Blue Devils got nine kills from
Morgan Denny (Fr, Luck) and
Tori Sandstrom (Jr, Cary, Ill). Denny also recorded a solo block and three assisted blocks.
Karley Wiensch (Fr, Cadott) needed to dish out only 22 assists in the win.
As a team, the Blue Devils hit .377, while limited Macalester to a hitting percentage of .023. Taylor Tinkham recorded seven kills for Macalester.
Scratching and clawing their way for every point, UW-Stout still was tipped by the University of Dubuque, 3-0, in the first game of the UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (3-17) were edged, 25-21, 25-23, 30-28.
Mikutowski, who left in the third set due to injury, led Stout with 12 kills and three service aces.
Megan Shanahan (Jr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) matched Mikutowski n service aces with three.
Emily Crew (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) and
Hope Weilage (Jr, Marshall, Minn) each had nine kills.
The Spartans' (12-13) Carly Green led all players with 16 kills, while Lauren McKissic finished with 13.
Stout will play Luther College and UW-Stevens Point Saturday.
