MENOMONIE (January 8, 2011) - If turnabout is fair play, then UW-Platteville got one back.
One season after UW-Stout eliminated Platteville from the WIAC tournament on a buzzer beater, the Pioneers exacted a measure of revenge with a buzzer-beating, 83-81, win Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
With 1.5 seconds remaining and the Pioneers holding the ball under the opposite basket, Chas Cross took a nearly full court pass and laid the ball in as the buzzer sounded.
The loss wrecked a solid second half by the Blue Devils (7-7, 2-4), who went into halftime with a two-point, 42-40, deficit, but fought their way back to as much as a nine point lead midway through the second half.
But the Pioneers (9-5, 2-4) kept chipping away and tied the game at 79-79 with two minutes left. Stout took the lead back on a pair of free throws by
Jordan Nelson (Jr, Maple Grove, Minn), but Platteville's Eric Wall tied the game at 81 with 27 seconds remaining. Stout had an opportunity to take the lead back with four seconds remaining, but a 3-pointer missed, setting up Platteville's winner.
Platteville's Brent Stangel led all scorers with 23 points, 20 in the second half. Nick Allen pitched in 15 points, Joe Allen 13 and Wall finished with 12. Cross racked up eight points.
For Stout,
Eric Hostetter (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) finished with 17 points.
Jerrod Buchholtz (Sr, Durand), coming off a 34-point effort his last time out, notched 14 points.
Erik Olson (So, Buffalo, Minn) and
Alex Oman (Fr, Lake Elmo, Minn) each scored 11 points and Nelson added 10. Olson finished with a game-high seven assists.
Stout is off until Saturday, Jan. 15 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh.
