MENOMONIE (September 8, 2010) - UW-Stout proved to be the survivor in a contest with St. Catherine that saw four of the five sets go into extra time as the Blue Devils prevailed, 3-2, Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
In a match that saw the point spread very rarely exceed three points, Stout (1-4) picked up their first win of the season with a 25-27, 27-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12 win.
Steph Nichols (Sr, Greendale) stepped to the net and pounded out a career-best 20 kills to lead Stout.
Hope Weilage (So, Marshall, Minn) collected 12 kills, while
Tori Sandstrom (So, Cary, Ill) finished with 10 kills.
Kim Labat (Sr, Marshall, Minn) finished the night with 27 digs, while
Megan Shanahan (So, Norwood-Young America, Minn) and Weilage each had 21 digs.
The Wildcats (1-4) were not slouches on the attack as Brittni Wangerin racked up a team-high 14 kills, Kayla Sis finished with 13 kills and Marie O'Neil had 12 kills. Nicole Neumann, who had recorded 42 digs in a match last week, led all players with 32 digs.
Stout will compete at Viterbo University this weekend, meeting Waldorf College, Friday, Sept. 10 and Luther College and Viterbo on Saturday, Sept. 11.
