MENOMONIE, Wis. (February 20, 2010) - UW-Stout finished the game with a 9-0 run to pull away from the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds, Saturday evening, winning their regular season finale, 94-87, at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout (15-10, 9-7) got off to the hot start, taking a seven-point lead after just two minutes of play. Eau Claire (14-11, 6-10) took their first lead of the game, however, five minutes and stretched it to four points halfway through the period. Stout answered with a 10-2 run, led by five points from
Grant Franzen (Sr, Waverly, Iowa).
The teams went back-and-forth with scoring for much of the first half, as Eau Claire converted nine of 20 three-point attempts and Stout shot 57 percent from the field. Stout went into halftime with a nine-point lead, their largest of the first half.
Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Sr, Anoka, Minn.), who finished with a game-high 26 points on senior night, started the second half off with a three-pointer, giving the Blue Devils a 12-point lead. Josh Prince stopped the bleeding for the Blugolds, as he 11 points in the first six minutes of the half, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
The two teams hung close for the rest of the half and two late free throws from
Eric Hostetter (Jr, Stillwater, Minn.) put Stout up by three with 23 seconds to play. After a missed jumper on the Blugolds' possession,
Erik Olson (Fr, Buffalo, Minn.) was able to seal the deal for the Blue Devils.
Nine players went into double figures in scoring on the day, three of them scoring over 20. Hostetter and Franzen each collected seven boards to lead the field.
Stout will host UW-Platteville in a WIAC Quarterfinal game this Tuesday, February 23, at 8 p.m.
