UW-Stout 66, Edgewood College 62
RIPON (November 20, 2010) - The difference in this contest proved to be who could make their 3-pointers and their free throws. UW-Stout could and went on to defeat Edgewood College, 66-62, Saturday on the final day of the Ripon College Tournament.
In a loss the night before to host Ripon College, UW-Stout (made only 4 percent of their 3-pointers (1-24) and 50 percent of their free throws. But today, the Blue Devils (1-2) made 41 percent (7-17) of their 3-pointers and 62 percent (23-37) of their free throws. The Eagles, meanwhile missed all 13 of their shots from beyond the arc and hit 44 percent (14-32) of their free throws.
But the Blue Devils had to come from behind. After trailing for most of the first half and 38-29 at halftime, Stout went on a 24-4 run to take a 10-point, 53-42, lead midway through the second half.
Whitney Rawdon (So, Eau Claire) led the Blue Devils during the run, scoring seven of her game-high 16 points during the 10 minutes.
Sami Schoeder (Fr, Durand) started the run with a 3-pointer five seconds into the half.
Kayla Windt (So, Pence) added five points, as did Schoeder and
Gretta Layman (Sr, Chippewa Falls) had four points in the run.
But the Blue Devils had to hold off the Eagles (1-2), who pulled to within one point a couple of times in the final minute of the game before Stout connected from the free throw line and a key steal from Windt under the Edgewood basket to record the win.
The Eagles' Brittany Bylsma matched Rawdon's 16 points. The Eagles got 13 points and 11 rebounds from Melanie Walker. Danielle Dixon also contributed 13 points.
For the second consecutive night, Schoeder scored in 14 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and 8-of-10 free throws. Windt added 10 points.
Tricia VanVreede (Sr, Little Chute) was named to the all-tournament team.
Stout will host Northwestern College, Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m.
