Blue Devils block way to conference win

MENOMONIE (October 20, 2010) - Led by Hope Weilage (So, Marshall, Minn) and Steph Nichols (Sr, Greendale), UW-Stout used the blocking game to overcome UW-Superior, 3-1, Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils finished the night with 27 block assists, five short of the school record and Weilage and Nichols combined for 16 block assists to lead the way. Weilage racked up nine block assists, one short of the single match school record, and Nichols had seven.

Sara Kjos (Jr, Hamburg, Minn) joined in on the blocking parade with a solo block and five block assists.

In the process, the Blue Devils (3-20, 1-7) picked up their first conference win of the season in their final home match of the year. Stout dropped the first match, 26-24, then came back to win the final three, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19.

Kjos finished the night with a match-high 11 kills, while Weilage added nine, Tori Sandstrom (So, Cary, Ill) eight and Nichols seven.

The Yellowjackets (8-18, 0-8) got nine kills from Rachel Langer and Wendy Bowman.

Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Friday, Oct. 22 when they will take on the Pointers in a non-conference contest and will meet Cardinal Stritch later in the afternoon. Stout will be at Beloit College, Saturday, Oct. 23.
