UW-Stout 95, UW-Whitewater 77
Whitewater, Wis. (January 30, 2010) - Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Sr, Anoka, Minn.) scored the first 10 points as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 14-3 lead before the first media timeout at 15:17. The Blue Devils took that surge and held on the rest of the way to come away with the big road win 95-77 at Whitewater.
The Blue Devils (10-9, 5-6 WIAC) would increase their first half lead to as large as 20 points after a three-point basket by
Jerrod Buchholtz (Jr, Durand) with 4:47 left in the half.
The Warhawks (16-3, 8-2 WIAC) would respond in the last four minutes of the half with a 16-6 run to decrease the Stout lead to only 10 points at the break. Dustin Mitchell fueled the late surge with seven points of his own including a desperation three at the halftime buzzer.
The halftime lead was 46-36 for the Blue Devils because of the play of
Jerrel Enerson-Matthews, who had 18 first half points, 10 in the first 3:35 of the game.
Dustin Mitchell would follow up his buzzer beating three-pointer with another three-pointer to open the second half cutting the Blue Devil lead to only seven points. The Blue Devils would respond with a furry as they post a 21-5 run over the next seven minutes of the game.
The run was capped by a stretch of great plays from
Michael Fant (Sr, Weston). Fant hit a three-pointer with 13:03 left, the lead was 19. Fant followed up that three-pointer with a steal and a lay-up to increase the lead to 21. On the next possession, the Blue Devils went back to Fant as he hit another three-pointer increasing the lead to 67-44 with 12:33 left and forces a Warhawk timeout. After the Warhawk timeout the Blue Devils would score on their next two possessions including a third three-pointer from
Michael Fant. Fant scored 11 points in the game, all within 1 minute and 18 seconds.
The largest lead for the Blue Devils came at the 10:58 mark when
Eric Hostetter (Jr, Stillwater, Minn.) nailed a three-pointer to give the Blue Devils a 28 point lead at 78-50.
The Warhawks would respond with a surge of their own to cut the lead to as low as 12 points, 85-73 at the 2:33 minute mark. The Blue Devils would close out the Warhawks to complete the upset with a 10-4 run to end the game.
Jerrel Enerson-Matthews led five Blue Devils in double figures with 24 points and nine rebounds. Hostetter stays hot with 20 points,
Mahlon Thomas (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Buchholtz pitch in with 12 points and nine rebounds and 10 points and seven rebounds respectively and
Michael Fant scores 11 off the bench.
Erik Olson (Fr, Buffalo, Minn) had 11 assists, three short of the school record of 14.
The Warhawks were led by Dustin Mitchell's 28 points and Dupree Fletcher and DJ Dantzler score 16 and 15 points off the bench respectively.
The Blue Devils shot 53.1 percent from the field including 40.7 percent (11-27) from three-point land. The 53.1 percent is the best the Blue Devils have shot from the field in any game this season. The 95 points is the second most points this season. The Blue Devils also had a season high 34 field goals made and 24 assists.
The Blue Devils return to Johnson Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Feb. 3 to host another national ranked team in the Pointers from Stevens Points.
