UW-Stout 24, Jamestown College 14
JAMESTOWN, ND (September 12, 2009) - UW-Stout scored 17 unanswered fourth quarter points to take a 24-14 win over Jamestown College, Saturday.
After a good return of the opening kickoff, the Blue Devils took an early lead when
Ross Carey (So, Little Suamico) hooked up with
Antawan Walker (Jr, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) on the second play from scrimmage for a 41-yard touchdown connection.
After forcing the Jimmies into two consecutive three-and-outs, Stout drove deep into Jamestown territory, but could not capitalize due to the first of three lost fumbles on the day.
Jamestown, on the other hand, capitalized on the opportunity opened to them by the fumble, driving 73 yards for a game-tying touchdown, capped by a 49-yard touchdown reception by Lance Johansen.
After holding Stout, the Jimmies got the ball back on their own 24-yard line. The ensuing 76-yard drive took over four minutes and ended with a Max Boe touchdown reception, marking quarterback Mike Beehler's second score of the day.
The Blue Devils had a chance to tie the score with an impressive 81-yard drive of their own, but coughed up the ball on the opponent's two yard line, and the score remained 14-7 at the halfway mark.
On their first drive of the second half, the offensive woes continued for Stout as they turned the ball over for the third time, all of which were fumbles.
At the end of the third quarter, Stout started what would be their most important and most impressive drive of the night. After receiving the ball on their own 20 yard line, the Blue Devils' offense converted on three key third downs to march 80 yards on 16 plays.
Carlos Concepcion (Jr, Milwaukee) finished the drive off with a four-yard run to knot the game at 14.
Jamestown answered by driving 50 yards down to Stout's 23 yard line, but took a page from their opponent's book, fumbling the ball, and headed back to the sidelines empty-handed.
On the next possession, Stout put together another 80-yard drive. This four-minute drive consisted of 10 plays, the final of which was a 14-yard Carey pass to a wide-open
Patrick Mengelkoch (Jr, Champlin, Minn.), giving Stout their first lead of the second half.
The defense came up with a big three-and-out, and on the following Stout possession,
Kyle Martin (Sr, Hubertus) successfully converted on a game-clinching 42-yard field goal, the longest of his career.
"On the road, you have to come out fast," Blue Devil coach
Duey Naatz said. "Well, we did, but then we relaxed and didn't get back to work. At halftime, we talked about getting back to fundamentals.
"In the second half, our defense made some plays and
Ross Carey made some big plays."
Carey completed 19 of 32 passes for 210 yards and two TDs. Walker pulled in four passes for 70 yards and Mengelkoch had six receptions for 67 yards. The Stout defense snagged two interceptions, one by
Kendall Wade (Sr, Milwaukee) and one by
Mike Berg (Sr, Watkins, Minn).
Stout finished the day with 344 total yards, 134 rushing and 210 in the air. Jamestown had 277 total yards, 129 rushing, 148 passing.
The Blue Devils are off next week, and return home Saturday, Sept. 26 to host Eureka College at 1 p.m.
