MENOMONIE (February 14, 2009) - Down by as many as 21 points in the second half, UW-Stout never rolled over and a late charge came up short as the Blue Devils fell to UW-La Crosse, 91-79, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout cut the score to as little as six points with three minutes remaining in the game, but were forced to foul in attempt to get the ball back and La Crosse responded by hitting all 10 of their free throws in the final 73 seconds of the game.
Stout (7-15, 1-12) trailed, 53-40, at halftime and outscored the Eagles (10-13, 4-10), 39-38, in the second half.
Kurt Kincaid came off the bench for the Eagles to score 18 second half points on his way to a game-high 22 points. Kincaid drilled 6-of-7 3-pointers, four after the break.
Stout was led by Eric Hostetter (So, Stillwater, Minn), who scored a career-best 21 points. Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) added 15 points, Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) 13 and Mahlon Thomas (So, Brooklyn Park, Minn) 10. Thomas recorded a double double with 10 rebounds.
The Eagles also got 15 points from both Trevor Stratton and Al Chery. Andy Merklein contributed 14 and Tony Mane tossed in 11 points.
The Eagles held an advantage at both the free throw line and the 3-point line. LaCrosse was 17-of-18 from the free throw line and hit 12-of-27 from beyond the arc. Stout was 12-of-17 from free throw land and 7-of-27 from 3-point range.
Stout will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m., then will close out the season by hosting UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m.
