UW-Stout 72, Viterbo 61
LA CROSSE, Wis. (December 19, 2009) - UW-Stout opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take a lead they would never relinquish, as they went on to defeat Viterbo University, 72-61, Saturday afternoon at W.R. Beggs Gym.
The run featured three consecutive three-pointers from Jerrod Buchholtz (Jr, Durand), who finished the night with a team-high 18 points. Buchholtz scored 15 points in the second half.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half, as the largest lead was Viterbo's six-point margin midway through the period. The V-Hawk's Scott Buschman scored 12 points in the first eight and a half minutes, while the Blue Devils had scored 13 as a team.
Stout stretched their lead to 10 in the first two minutes of the second half, and Viterbo could not get the deficit below four, as the Blue Devils stopped their five-game losing skid.
Buchholtz was five-for-10 from beyond the arc. As a team, Stout dropped in nine 3-point attempts, with Eric Hostetter (Jr, Stillwater, Minn) draining three bombs for 12 points. Michael Fant (Sr, Weston) added one 3-pointer in the first half and finished with eight points. Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Sr, Anoka, Minn) pulled down 10 rebounds and added six points.
Buschman was 14-for-18 from the field to score a game-high 29 points. He also led all players by pulling down 14 rebounds.
Stout returns to action Sunday, Dec. 27, when they travel to Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. Stout will play at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, Monday, Dec. 28. Both schools are in the Pacific time zone.
