Winona State 83, UW-Stout 66
WINONA, Minn (November 16, 2009) - UW-Stout trailed by three points at halftime, but perennial NCAA Division II power Winona State pulled away in the second half to take an 83-66 season opening win Monday at McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors went on a 12-0 run to start the second half and led in double digits the rest of the way.
The Warriors' David Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, hitting 5-of-9 3-pointers. CJ Erickson scored 19 and Jon Walburg added 15.
Stout got 13 points from
Mahlon Thomas (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) and
Jerrod Buchholtz (Jr, Durand). Buchholtz drained 3-of-5 3-pointers.
Michael Fant (Sr, Weston) scored 10 points.
Steve Pax (Fr, Elmwood) scored eight points and led Stout in rebounds with five.
Winona State had an advantage from the free throw line. The Warriors drained 15-of-17 shots from the charity stripe, while Stout made 3-of-5 free throws.
Stout will be at the Bethel University Tournament, Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21. The Blue Devils will open the tournament by playing Waldorf College.
