Carey tallies 291 total yards on the day

Stout 35, La Crosse 28

LA CROSSE (October 31, 2009) - Quarterback Ross Carey (So, Little Suamico) had a monster day and running back Craig Warminski (So, Stanley) didn't do too bad either as the sophomores accounted for all five touchdowns and carried UW-Stout to a 35-28 win at UW-La Crosse Saturday.

Carey rushed for 161 yards, including a 61 yard scamper that set up Stout's second score,  ran for one score, was not sacked on the day and completed 13-of-16 passes for 131 yards and a score, connecting on a six-yard scoring play to tight end Patrick Mengelkoch (Jr, Champlin Park, Minn). Carey tallied 292 total yards of offense.

Warminski rushed for three touchdowns and carried the ball 28 times for 128 yards. Warminski also caught four passes for 27 yards.

While the score was tied at 14-14 at halftime, the Eagles' Reid Oldenburg was the story in the first half. Oldenburg scored two touchdowns and had more than 130 yards of rushing. Oldenburg scored the first TD of the game, a two-yard on the Eagles first possession. Oldenburg carried the ball eight times accounting for 38 yards in the drive.

The Blue Devils (6-2, 3-2) moved the ball to the Eagles 30 on their next drive, but Carey was picked off by Derek Dreher.

Stout tied the score on first play of  the second quarter when Carey hit Mengelkoch on the two-yard line and the tight end bulled his way in for the score. But the Eagles (5-3, 2-3) grabbed the lead back on their next series and Oldenburg capped off the drive with a 22-yard run.

Stout tied the score again, this time with five minutes reamaining in the half. Carey accounted for 61 of the drive's 84 yards when he took off on third-and-two to the La Crosse 2-yard line. A horse collar tackle personal foul put the ball on the one-yard line and Warminski scored his first TD of the game.

Warminski added a two-yard touchdown five minutes into the third to give Stout a 21-14 lead and Carey rushed 34 yards into the end zone on the second play of the fourth quarter to give Stout a 28-14 lead.

Oldenburg scored at the 10 minute mark of the fourth to pull the Eagles to within 28-21.

Carlos Concepcion (Jr, Milwaukee) returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to the La Crosse 46 and Stout needed five plays to score, with Warminski scoring from 11-yards out and a 35-21 lead.

The Eagles' Dreher picked up a Warminski fumble and raced 35 yards with three minutes left to tighten the score to what would be the final 35-28.

Stout finished with 433 total yards of offense, 302 on the ground, 131 in the air. Stout scored on all four trips into the red zone. La Crosse finished with 430 total yards, 218 on the ground - with Oldenburg gaining 180 yards - and 212 by the pass.

Stout's defensive back Adam Churchill (Jr, Plum City) had 12 tackles as the Eagles' Nick Anker completed 22-of-38 passes. Marcus Ball (Sr, Austin, Minn) picked up another sack to push his totals to 6.5 sacks.

Kyle Martin (Sr, Hubertus) pushed his consecutive extra point mark to 66 by making all five PAT opportunities.

The win marked the first time Stout ever won three consecutive games over La Crosse. Stout has won the last two meetings between the schools, including a 26-14 win last October in Menomonie and a 31-28 win two years ago in La Crosse.

Stout will close out the home portion of their schedule Saturday, Nov. 7 when they host UW-Platteville at 3 p.m.
