MENOMONIE (October 3, 2009) - UW-Stout used a defensive stand in overtime to shut down UW-River Falls on a two-point conversion to defeate the Falcons 13-12 Saturday at Stout's annual homecoming game at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.
After the Blue Devils (4-0, 1-0) scored first in overtime and made the extra point to take a 13-6 lead, the Falcons scored on a six play drive, capped off by a 7-yard run by Taylor Edwards.
The Falcons (2-2, 0-1) elected to go for the two-point conversion. Falcon quarterback Ryan Luessenheide rolled to his right, cut back and was met by Stout's
Trevor Fiege (So, Menomonie) and
Shay Lehman (Sr, Edgar), who dropped Luessenheide on the 5-yard line to give Stout the win.

The Falcons scored first in the contest. After intercepting a
Ross Carey (So, Little Suamico) pass, the Falcons needed only five plays to go 66 yards to score in two minutes. Edwards got the score, a 9-yard run, but the big play was a 39-yard pass from Luessenheide to Ryan Hansen to the nine, setting up Edwards' run.
The Blue Devils scored twice in the second quarter on field goals of 19- and 22-yards by
Kyle Martin (Sr, Hubertus).
The Falcons had a chance to take the lead with a minute left in regulation, but a 37 yard field goal attempt went wide left.
Stout received the ball first in overtime, and Carey hit
Patrick Mengelkoch (Jr, Champlin Park, Minn) with a 9-yard reception and Martin booted his 57th consecutive career extra point to give Stout a 13-6 lead, their first lead of the game.
Edwards rolled up 207 yards rushing to lead all categories and the Falcons finished with 224 yards rushing and 203 yards of total offense. Stout's
Craig Warminski (So, Stanley) netted 93 yards on the ground. Stout finished with 322 total yards, 193 on the ground. Carey completed 13-of-29 passes for 139 yards.
Stout will travel to UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 10, for the Pointers' homecoming game.
