MENOMONIE (October 24, 2009) - When UW-Stout's
Andrea Greer (Jr, Woodbury, Minn) scored with less than five minutes remaining to cut the score in half, the Blue Devils had a legitimate chance to knot the score.
With four seconds remaining,
Courtney Tideman (So, Sartell, Minn) launched a rocket at UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Jacqueline Piasecki, but Piasecki smothered the ball and allowed the clock to run out to give the Warhawks a 2-1 win at Nelson Field Saturday.
The Warhawks (10-7-1, 4-3-1) controlled the field in the first half, especially early and Stephanie DesJardins scored twice to give Whitewater a 2-0 halftime lead. DesJardins sent a rocket of her own from about 25 yards out that hit the left pipe and ricocheted into the goal in the 10th minute of the contest.
DesJardins scored 15 minutes later from the same spot. The Warhawks outshot Stout , 7-2, in the first half and had nine first half corner kicks.
Stout (5-13-0, 3-5-0), playing their final home game of the season, equalized the playing field considerably in the second half, outshooting the Warhawks, 5-1, after the break. For Stout's goal, Greer took the ball from Tideman off a direct kick and flicked the ball into the goal at 85:25.
But the only other shot on net Stout managed in the second half was Tideman's last second shot.
Both Whitewater's Piasecki and Stout's
Bridget LaVallee (Fr, St. Michael, Minn) had two saves.
The loss take's Stout destiny out of their own hands. A win or a tie would have automatically qualified Stout into the WIAC tournament. UW-River Falls defeated UW-Platteville in double overtime, 1-0, allowing Stout into the tournament. Stout will play on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in the first round of the WIAC tournament.
The game marked the final home appearance of defender
Katie Zernikel (Sr, Hartford). The Blue Devils also collected canned goods, which will be donated to the local food pantry.
