UW-Stout 5, St. John's 3 | Live Stats
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (January 8, 2009) - After two periods, fifth ranked UW-Stout seemed to have the game firmly in hand, but then the third period arrived and the Blue Devils held off St. John's University, 5-3, Thursday at the National Hockey Center.
The Blue Devils (10-4-0) carried a 3-0 lead into the third period. The Johnnies (3-10-1) scored five minutes into the period, but Stout's Derek Hanson (Jr, Bemidji, Minn) answered back 25 seconds later for his second goal of the evening. St. John's pulled within two goals three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Grant Allena.
Scott Motz (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn) gave Stout a more comfortable lead, 5-2, at the 11 minute mark. The Johnnies' Allena scored one last goal with two minutes left in the game while on the power play and with an extra attacker.
Stout showed little signs of a one-month layoff early in the game. Hanson scored his first goal of the game, on the power play, midway through the first period. Joel Whited (Fr, Indianapolis, Ind) added a goal three minutes into the second period and David Larson (So, Warroad, Minn) stretched the lead to 3-0 with a power play goal at the 13 minute mark.
Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) recorded 38 saves to get the win for Stout. Stu Van Ess had 26 saves for St. John's. The win moved Stout's winning streak to five games.
Stout returns home Friday, Jan. 9 when they host Concordia-Moorhead at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
