MENOMONIE  (January 24, 2009) - The schedule read a basketball game, but at times it looked like UW-Stout and UW-Platteville were participating in a wrestling match, as many times as the two teams were on the ground grappling for the ball.
When one team recorded a takedown, the other team notched a quick reversal.
But in the end, it was fifth ranked UW-Platteville that got the decision, a 55-51 win over UW-Stout at Johnson Fieldhouse, Saturday.
The Pioneers' Curt Hanson stole the ball and went the full length of the court for a lay-in with 33 seconds remaining to give Platteville (16-2, 8-1) a 54-51 lead. Moments later, Charlie Lohoff made the first of two free throws for the final score.
But the Blue Devils (6-11, 1-8) played even with the Pioneers throughout the game, never falling behind by more than seven points and eventually tying the game at 47-47 on a 3-pointer by Jerrod Buchholtz (So, Durand) with 7:34 left in the game. Lohoff answered with a bucket at 3:59, and Stout tied the game moments later on a bucket by Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn).
Mike Shaw put the Pioneers up 51-49 with 1:44 left on the clock, but two free throws by Buchholtz tied the score for the third time in the half. The Pioneers failed to convert two free throws with a minute remaining, but Jeff Skemp was fouled on the rebound and made the first of two charity shots and a 52-51 Platteville lead. Seconds later, Hanson recorded his game-winning steal and bucket.
Buchholtz led all scorers with 19 points, while Enerson-Matthews scored 16 points. Hanson and Skemp both scored 15 points for Platteville. Stout held Platteville to 35.6 percent shooting for the game, 28.6 percent in the second half. Stout shot 44.2 percent for the game, and outrebounded the Pioneers, 31-23.
Stout will be at Silver Lake College, Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Manitowoc, then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Jan. 31.
