Stout wins; Katie Ness gets hat trick

UW-Stout 3, Lawrence University 1

APPLETON  (September 7, 2008) - Katie Ness (So, River Falls) scored her first career hat trick as she led UW-Stout to their first win of the season, a 3-1 win at Lawrence University.

Ness, who as a freshman last year, tallied two total goals, matched that total with two goals in the first half, then added another in the second period. Ness's first goal came in the second minute of the game, on an assist by Cassie Palokangas (So, Apple Valley, Minn) and her second goal came in the eighth minute with an assist by Kaitlin Arjes (So, Owatonna, Minn).

Lawrence cut the lead in half with about eight minutes left in the first half, on a goal by Sarah Ehlinger.

Ness got her final goal of the game, unassisted in the 68th minute.

The Vikings (0-3-0) pressed the Blue Devils (1-2-1) throughout the day, outshooting Stout, 27-13. Jessica Halverson (Sr, Delano, Minn) and Taylor Randle (Fr, Shoreview, Minn) split the time in net, each taking a half and each recording nine saves. Lawrence's Lindsey Ahlen notched six saves.

The Blue Devils will be at Bethel University, Thursday, Sept. 11 and will open the WIAC season, Saturday, Sept. 13 at UW-Stevens Point.
