St. Scholastica takes Stout in four sets

MENOMONIE  (September 16, 2008) - UW-Stout won the first set, but could not hang on to a lead and lost to St. Scholastica, 3-1, Tuesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (2-8) edged out the Saints (3-7) in the first game, 26-24, but Scholastica took the match with the final three sets, 25-13, 25-21, 26-24.

Stout held a five point lead in the fourth set, but St. Scholastica stormed back to win the set and match in overtime.

Steph Nichols (So, Greendale) had one of her strongest games at the net since moving to the outside. Nichols finished the match with 19 kills, and committed no errors to hit at a .655 clip. Nichols was the only Blue Devil to hit in double digits.

The Saints basically utilized only seven players throughout the night with Amy Thompson cashing in 15 kills and Shawna Varichak finished with 11.

Stout opens WIAC play this weekend when they are are at UW-Oshkosh Friday, Sept. 19 and at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Sept. 20.
