MENOMONIE (September 13, 2008) - UW-Stout lost both contests in the second day of the UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament Saturday, bowing out to Luther College, 3-1, in the morning session, then getting edged, 3-2, in the second contest by Dakota State.
(NOTE: A reporting error earlier said that Stout defeated Dakota State, but the opposite was true. The statistics remain the same, except for the most important one.)
UW-Stout opened play this morning against Luther College. Luther took the first set, 25-22, but the Blue Devils battled back to capture the second set, 26-24. The Norse then took two consecutive sets, 25-17, 25-21, capturing their second of three wins in the tournament.
Three Blue Devils totaled 10 kills. Jenna Swanson (Jr, Hayfield, Minn.) and Sara Kjos (Fr, Hamburg, Minn.) each recorded 10 kills on 28 attempts, while Maggie Meixl (Sr, Mankato, Minn.) tallied 34 total attacks to go along with her team-high three blocks. Kim Labat (So, Marshall, Minn.) was responsible for all 39 of Stout's assists.
In Stout's second game of the day, they faced a winless Dakota State, and gave the Trojans their first win in the tournament with a tight, 17-25, 25-20, 10-25, 25-14, 20-18, decision.
Again, three Stout players totaled 10 or more kills. This time, instead of Kjos, it was Steph Nichols (So, Greendale) recording 10 on 33 attacks. Swanson added 12 more to her daily total on 35 attacks, while Meixl put away 11 kills on 25 attacks, recording a game-best .440 hitting percentage.
Labat served up 41 assists this game. Alicia Mizer (Jr, Barron) led the Blue Devils in digs with 19 while freshman Kristie Lakatos (Fr, Menomonie) added 16.
Meixl was the lone Blue Devil named to the all-tournament team.
