Blue Devils fall twice in own volleyball tournament

MENOMONIE  (September 12, 2008) - UW-Stout was defeated by two teams wearing maroon at the UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament Friday.

The Blue Devils (2-4) lost their opening match in three setsto Viterbo University (9-3), 25-13, 25-19, 25-22, then fell in the final match of the evening in five sets to UM-Morris (3-2), 25-23, 12-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-9.

In the opener, the two teams combined for only player apiece in double digit kills. Stout's Maggie Meixl (Sr, Mankato, Minn) had 10 kills, as did the V-Hawks' Abby Breitung.

Against Morris, Meixl tallied 19 kills, with Steph Nichols (So, Greendale) and Jenna Swanson (Jr, Hayfield, Minn) adding 13. Kim Labat (So, Marshall, Minn) had 50 assists. The Cougars got 12 kills from Alison Pippo and 10 from Briana Czer.

Stout will play Luther College and Dakota State University Saturday in the final day of the tourney.

Seven teams will participate this weekend in the annual UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament, Friday and Saturday.

Play will begin at 2 p.m., Friday when the host Blue Devils will face Viterbo University. Two matches will follow every two hours at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Play on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m., then continue at noon and 2 p.m.

Participating teams include: UW-Stevens Point, Northwestern College, Viterbo University, UM-Morris, Dakota State, Luther College
