MENOMONIE  (September 10, 2008) - St. Catherine took the second, fourth and fifth sets and defeated UW-Stout, 3-2, in the Blue Devils' home opener.

While Stout (2-3) had an impressive night from senior Maggie Meixl (Mankato, Minn), especially in the blocking game, St. Catherine (4-5) made the right moves when they had to to take the win. The Wildcats took the match 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 15-5.

After Stout won the first game, the Blue Devils put St. Catherine's in a 10-2 hole early, but the Wildcats pulled ahead, 19-16, at one point and went on to the 25-22 win. Stout did not help their cause at all, commiting nearly 10 ball handling errors in the set.

Stout did bounce back in the third set, thanks to Meixl's five kills and three solo blocks. On the night, Meixl had a team-high 18 kills, seven solo blocks and five block assists.

The Wildcats jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the fourth set, but the closest Stout would get would be five points, at 21-16. St. Kate's dominated the fifth set with eight kills.

St. Catherine got 19 kills from Megan Albrecht and 14 kills from Maria Hoffman. Jenna Swanson (Jr, Hayfield, Minn) added 10 kills for Stout.

Stout will host the UW-Stout Volleyball Tournament Sept. 12-13 and will host St. Scholastica, Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
