Augsburg 1, UW-Stout 0
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (August 29, 2008) - Augsburg's Whitney Holman scored the lone goal of the game on a free kick in the 70th minute, and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot recorded an Augsburg College career record shutouts with 27, as the Auggies scored a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a non-conference women's soccer game on Friday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Holman set a free kick from 40 yards out high over the head of UW-Stout goalkeeper Taylor Randle(Fr, Shoreview, Minn) for the lone goal of the game, the first of the season for both teams.
DeGroot had to make just two saves in the contest, as Augsburg outshot UW-Stout by a 23-10 margin, but one of her saves was a crucial one. Just a minute-and-a-half after Holman's goal, UW-Stout forward Jessica Price (So, Woodbury, Minn.) blasted a shot from the upper left corner of the penalty box, which DeGroot saved with a sprawling, one-hand deflection. Katilin Arjes (So, Owatonna, Minn) sent a diving header at DeGroot from within the six-foot box the goalie stopped.
Randle, playing in her first collegiate game, turned away 11 shots, while the seasoned DeGroot stopped two shots. In total shots, Augsburg outdid Stout, 23-10.
Price and Katie Ness (So, River Falls) each finished the night with three shots.
Augsburg had a solid chance to score in the first half, as Lacey Hoover put two point-blank shots on Randle in a scramble in the 31st minute. Nine minutes later, UW-Stout had its best chance to score in the opening frame, as a close free kick by Price sailed high.
Stout will be at Augustana College, Monday, Sept. 1 for a 2 p.m. Labor Day matchup.
