MENOMONIE (December 5, 2008) - Joel Gaulrapp (Jr, Owatonna, Minn) scored two goals and led UW-Stout to a 5-2 win over defending national champion St. Norbert College Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
Gaulrapp scored the first goal of the game only 28 seconds into the game, then got the fifth and clinching goal on a breakaway halfway through the final period.
The Blue Devils (8-4-0, 3-2-0 NCHA) got the first four goals of the game. Paul Henderson (Jr, Menomonie) scored seven minutes into the first period.
Scott Motz (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored 2-minutes, 31-seconds into the second period, then Danny Ryan (So, Niles, Ill) scored a shorthanded goal five minutes later.
The Knights' (9-3-0, 3-2-0) AJ Gale put St. Norbert on the board halfway through the second. St. Norberts' Jason Nopper got a goal with two seconds left in the third period as Stout just came out the penalty box.
Matt Koenig (Sr, Lakeland, Minn) recorded 33 saves for Stout, while Stout chased St. Norbert starter Blake Bashor after the first three goals. Bashor recorded nine saves. BJ O'Brien came on in relief and recorded 18 saves.
The win was only the third win the Blue Devils have recorded over St. Norbert when both teams were varsity programs. Stout last defeated the Green Knights, 2-1, Jan. 27, 2001, in Green Bay. Stout's first win came in the early 1970s. This was the first time Stout has beaten St. Norbert in Menomonie.
The Green Knights were the top ranked team in the USCHO.com Division III poll, but a couple of losses over the past two weeks have pushed them to fourth in the poll. The Blue Devils, after dropping out of the polls two weeks ago, reappeared the following week after a pair of wins over nationally ranked teams. Stout has been ranked 12th the last two polls.
Stout will host Lake Forest College, Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. The game is expected to be available on a live video stream by Blue Devil Video with Matt Kaskavitch on the play by play and Kier McNamara handling the color. Live Stats is also expected to be available.
