MENOMONIE (October 11, 2008) - Four UW-Stout players scored their first goals of the season and the Blue Devils tallied the most goals in single game since the 2004 season with a 5-0 win over UW-Superior, Saturday at Nelson Field.
The Blue Devil (5-6-3, 3-1-2) defense also did the trick Saturday, holding the Yellowjackets (3-11-1, 0-5-0) to no shots on net. Stout outshot Superior, 36-2, overall.
But it was Stout's leading scorer, Jessica Price (So, Woodbury, Minn), who got things going, taking a pass from Grace Salwasser (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) in the 18th minute.
Then it was the first timers' turn as senior Cassey Haase (North Fond du Lac) scored her first career goal, unassisted in the 26th minute.
Four minutes later, Kelsey Keimig (Sr, White Bear Lake, Minn) launched a bomb from about 30 feet out to make the score 3-0. Moments later, Keimig lent a foot to a goal. Taking a long pass from Andrea Greer (So, Woodbury, Minn), Keimig hit the ball hard, just missing the net. But Laura Howard (Sr, Hudson) was there to punch the ball into the net to make the score 4-0 going into halftime.
The second half was scoreless until the 86th minute when Cathy Spriggs (Fr, Minneapolis, Minn) took a corner kick from Katie Ness (So, River Falls) for Spriggs' first career goal.
The win was Stout's fifth shutout of the season.
Stout returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire. Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 18 and return home Sunday, Oct. 19 to host St. Benedict at 3 p.m.
