With the 2023 season, Kody Zahrte begins his ninth season as a UW-Stout assistant track and field coach, specializing in the throws and his throws specialists have made a habit of climbing the podium at the conference championship and qualifying to the national championships.Â
Zahrte was selected as the 2022 North Region outdoor assistant coach of the year by the USTFCCCA.
Kevin Ruechel won the NCAA indoor shot put title and finished second in the shot put during the outdoor national meet, leading until the final throw of the day. Ruechel was the USTFCCCA North Region Field Performer of the year after winning both the WIAC indoor and outdoor shot put titles and the outdoor discus. Ruechel set career bests in all throws events this year - indoor shot put and weight throw and outdoor shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin. Mackenzie Huber set a school record in the indoor shot put and Huber and Demi Ploor qualified to both the indoor and outdoor national championship.
Ruechel won the 2021 outdoor national shot put title, winning the event on his final throw of the day.Â
Kevin Ruechel won the 2020 WIAC indoor shot put title and was seeded fourth heading to the national championship in the event. Freshman Mackenzie Huber was selected as the WIAC newcomer of the year after finishing second in the shot put at the WIAC indoor championship and qualifying to the national championship.
In 2019, Kevin Ruechel was second at the WIAC indoor championship and third at the conference outdoor championship in the shot put. Tyler Odom placed second in the javelin and Morgan Denton was second in the hammer throw. Ruechel qualified to the national meet in the weight throw and the discus. Denton advanced to the outdoor nationals in the hammer throw.Â
During the 2018 outdoor season, Sam Elsner was selected as the WIAC Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the hammer throw, the discus and finishing sixth in the shot put. The Blue Devil discus crew accounted for 19 team points with Elsner's first place finish, freshman Kevin Ruechel's second place finish and Anton Proksch's eighth place finish. Ruechel also was fifth in the shot put. For the women, Lydia Meier captured the hammer throw championship and Heidi Lieffort was second in the discus and javelin. The women's throws crew accounted for 39 team points at the meet.
During the 2018 indoor season, Sam Elsner was selected the NCAA Division III Field Athlete of the Meet after earning the national shot put title and finishing second in the weight throw. Kayla Pabst finished second nationally in the weight throw. At the WIAC indoor meet, Elsner was selected the WIAC Field Athlete of the Week after winning the shot and finishing second in the weight throw.
During the 2015 season, Austin Zett won the WIAC Outdoor discus crown, setting a school record and finishing second at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in the discus. Zett was selected as the Blue Devils' most valuable field performer. On the women's side, Lydia Meier qualified to the indoor (weight throw) and outdoor national championship (hammer throw, discus) and Michelle Brandt qualified to the indoor national meet (wight throw). Meier qualified nationally indoor in the weight throw and in the discus outdoor. Meier finished runner-up at the WIAC Indoor Championship in the weight throw, third in the outdoor hammer and sixth in the discus. Heidi Leiffort placed seventh in the discus at the WIAC Outdoor Championship.
Zahrte, a native of Black River Falls, Wis., competed four seasons for the Blue Devil track and field team and was a member of the Blue Devil football team as an offensive lineman.
