From his play as a freshman in 1977 when he was selected "Rookie of the Year," Blue Devil football fans knew he was destined for high honors. He achieved football's highest award at UW-Stout when he was named "Most Valuable Player" in the Wisconsin State University Conference in 1980. From his linebacking position, he captained the squad in his senior year, gaining a host of honors including All-American, all-conference and the NAIA's scholar athlete award.
