A four-year letter winner, he rewrote the Blue Devil record book from his halfback position. With 2562 yards, he became the first Blue Devil to gain more than 2000 career rushing yards and more than 1000 in a single season, a feat he accomplished twice. Stout's all-time leading scorer with 162 points, a number that has since been eclipsed, he earned the team's most valuable player award and all conference honors in 1978 and 1979.
