Since first stepping onto the UW-Stout campus as a student in 1978,
Layne Pitt has been involved in covering Stout in general and Blue Devil athletics in particular, first through the student newspaper, The Stoutonia (1978-81); the local newspaper, The Dunn County News (1981-92); UW-Stout Photographic Services (1992-94); as The Stoutonia faculty adviser (1994), and as the longest serving sports information director in the UW-Stout Athletic Department (1994-2022). During Pitt’s 28-year tenure, he initiated the department’s athletic website in 1996, added live stats and video streaming services of games, introduced social media, produced statistics, stories, game notes, player bios and photographs of thousands of games and events and publicized thousands of student-athletes. He has worked with the addition of men’s hockey, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse and varsity esports. Pitt managed publicity for the 2001 and 2017 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) championships and numerous NCAA Division III and WIAC championship events over the years. He was presented with the University’s Chancellor’s Academic Staff Award for Excellence in 2019, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College Sports Communicators for more than 25 years of service and Tom Butler Award by the WIAC.
