Almost single-handedly Butcher led the Blue Devils to a tie for the conference track championship with La Crosse in 1972. He lettered in track in 1970, 1971 and 1972 and was selected most valuable on the squad in each of those years. He also lettered in cross country. Track specialties were the long and triple jumps and the intermediate and high hurdles. At the 1972 WSUC Outdoor Championship held at UW-Stout, Butcher, a native of Barbados in the West Indies, was the conference champion in the triple jump, the 440 intermediate hurdles and the 120-high hurdles to top off his career.
